Monday 17th October: My Design Manifesto poster.

This is my manifesto poster. When i was given the brief of creating a typographical poster that expressed my personal creative manifesto , i automatically thought of it having some sort of hand drawn element to it , something fun and energetic to reflect what i had come up with. It was inspired by Andy Smith an illustrator that i came across on Pinterest. His style caught my eye the way that he combined hand drawn text and real life imagery together. I thought this would be a interesting way of expressing that i think imagination is the key to designing. I played around with different compositions of images of myself to give it a personal feel that an individual manifesto should have. I printed them all out and experimented with sketching my typography into the different compositions.
My inspiration - Andy Smith
This was my sketching process.

Tuesday 11th October : Exploring my Sense of place.

Today me and a fellow student decided to go on an adventure and explore the town, in hope to gain  some inspiration for "a sense of place". We ventured out with our cameras at the ready, hoping to capture the character of Huddersfield town through our photographs. The previous week during the Physical studio i found some really interesting typography whilst out drawing in the town. I really enjoyed interpreting that typography in my own way. Therefore i decided to focus on photographing the typography around the town because i want it to be a main theme running throughout my sense of place project. I found some really interesting typography, that i feel reflects the character of the town quite strongly. Some of my favourite images come from our trip to the market.

We then visited the local art gallery searching for inspiration.

Tuesday 11th October: Sense of place inspiration- linking theory with practice.

Thursday 6th October : Physical Studio 1

The Physical studio is a very important part of our Graphic Design degree. It helps develop essential skills so that we can begin to understand numerous things vital to the Graphic Design practice. For example experimenting with getting your mark down on a page, spacial arrangement of a design, how to bring together the composition of an image using mechanical skill and grasping realistic scale of images.

This first Physical studio was really important in helping us to learn about scale and helping us to develop our mark making . The aim of the studio was very prolific so that we could get the most out of the workshop, by experimenting with different medias and styles.

I began the workshop quite cynical as to what outcome i would create , because i was apprehensive about the thought of drawing from a physical object as it not one of my strongest skills. We went out into the town and were all sent to different locations to interpret the buildings and surrounding areas. My group was sent to the Parish church which is surrounded by wonderful old buildings full of character. I enjoyed this much than i expected and found the workshop very rewarding in terms of outcomes and skills i have discovered. I learnt how to successfully interpret a physical object in my own style and to the correct scale, and came out with a . I also scoured the area for interesting typography to replicate in my own style in which i came out with a very strong end result , using fine liner and Posca pens to define the shapes and curves of each letter.

Wednesday 5th October: Guest Lecture from Andrew Brown

Today we had a talk from Andrew Brown a creative directer at a design agency called 'Brass'. I found his talk very interesting, he spoke about the creative industry and how it is a constantly growing and  competitive industry. I found some of the things he said really inspirational. I have refined my notes and come out with five key ideas that i want to remember as i develop in my practice.

1. Grow ideas constantly and do things that make you an interesting person.
2. Work hard
3. Speak up and be confident about your ideas, your degree is your chance to do anything don't be traditional.
4. Work with people , share your ideas its the best way to do it.
5. Have fun, the more you enjoy it the more it will show through your work.

Monday 3rd October: The medium is the message

This section of Theory and practice was based on Convergence. Convergence is the coming together of 2 entities from different directions . In the design industry this could be the point for example where theory and practice meet. Two different ideas coming together as one to communicate a message to the audience. We specifically looked at when form and content converge together, i found this idea really interesting how sometimes if the form or medium of something is very clever it can affect how the content and message is portrayed to the audience.

This is our newspaper form.
This is often referred to as ‘The medium is the message’. This expression arose in the 1960s when it was created by Marshall McLuhan who wrote an essay on the concept. He suggested that the form of a medium embeds itself in a message. We looked at the example that if you consider the experience of watching a pixar film , looking at a pixar story board and visiting a pixar exhibition , they all have the same or similar content in them but because of the media/form they are portrayed in they each convey a different message and give a different experience. All different forms and medias effect the message communicated to the audience. To practice this concept we were given parts of old newspapers and magazines. We scoured them for text and images that could be used as our content. To then help us communicate the message we came up with , we created a form out of the newspaper that would help to convey it.

During this lecture we were spoken to by a previous student Jonathan Lindley who is now working in the industry. He gave us an insight on how convergence features in the Design industry. I was inspired about his talk on his experience in the industry and his message of how it is vital to understand the underpinning theory behind the practice.
