Tuesday 21st March: Kinetic typography 2, 3D space

For this workshop we were asked to explore 3D space, using the z-axis and kinetic typography. We were asked to create a piece of work inspired by a song, piece of poetry or literature that inspired us. The task was to first create illustrations telling the story of the words chosen.

I wanted to create illustrations that were quite simple so that i could play around with more complicated effects in After effects, without the overall composition becoming too complicated. I chose a song called Supermarket flowers by Ed Sheeran. I chose this because it is one of my favourite songs at this moment in time and i love the style of illustrations and the theme behind his current album. I wanted to use this to inspire my own style, so that it links to Ed Sheeran and the song.

Ed Sheerans album style, which i used as inspiration.

I had already designed that i wanted to use the colour scheme in my work, and i loved the contrast of the black against the white illustrations. I used a mixture of pro markers and post pens to create my illustrations, to create a rough and sketchy style to my work.

My initial sketches.
I then created a background for my work in photoshop. I used the album cover as a swatch for the colour, lowering the opacity and layering it over a chalk texture.

In the end i had to spend a lot of time outside the workshop after learning the techniques using z-axis, to finish the video as i wanted to create a 30 second clip instead of the suggested 10 seconds. Overall i am really proud of my outcome, it took a lot of work but i think it reflects a variety of the skills i have learnt in after effects over the past few months. In the future i would love to carry on this motion graphics and create a narration for the whole song.
