The aim of
this second typography workshop was to develop designs I had previously created
into full alphabets carrying through the various styles I had discovered.
I feel this
was my strongest development out of all the alphabets I created. I liked the
abstract style of my initial idea below on the right, the way the shapes all
fit nicely together inside the letter but I wanted to refine this further so
that the shapes physically made up the typography. I came across this image by,
I loved the structure of how all the different sized shapes fit together to
make one composition. Some sticking out, some over lapping others. I used this
idea to build my letters. I think the overall effect was interesting, but some
letters for example the X and the Y need to be refined as they are over
complicated meaning they have become illegible. Also, the scale of some of the
letters don’t work for example the a is bigger than the b, so I need to work on
getting the letters to work together.

In this alphabet, I tried to recreate the flow of the lines like my previous design. Although I like the style of the letters, using a thick marker on a smaller scale didn’t work that good ruining some of the detail of the letters and the variety of thicknesses of the lines. To develop this further I am going to try and recreate the variations of thickness myself using a thin fine liner to see if I can get more accurate lines and details in the serifs and curves of the letters.
