Thursday 16th February: Creating Typography from inspiration , stage 2

The aim of this second typography workshop was to develop designs I had previously created into full alphabets carrying through the various styles I had discovered.

I feel this was my strongest development out of all the alphabets I created. I liked the abstract style of my initial idea below on the right, the way the shapes all fit nicely together inside the letter but I wanted to refine this further so that the shapes physically made up the typography. I came across this image by, I loved the structure of how all the different sized shapes fit together to make one composition. Some sticking out, some over lapping others. I used this idea to build my letters. I think the overall effect was interesting, but some letters for example the X and the Y need to be refined as they are over complicated meaning they have become illegible. Also, the scale of some of the letters don’t work for example the a is bigger than the b, so I need to work on getting the letters to work together.

My influence for the above developments.

In this alphabet, I tried to recreate the flow of the lines like my previous design. Although I like the style of the letters, using a thick marker on a smaller scale didn’t work that good ruining some of the detail of the letters and the variety of thicknesses of the lines. To develop this further I am going to try and recreate the variations of thickness myself using a thin fine liner to see if I can get more accurate lines and details in the serifs and curves of the letters.

Thursday 2nd febuary: Kinetic typography.

Final typography vid 1 from Anna Loveland on Vimeo.

This was the first time I've tackled kinetic typography. At first i was slightly baffled but as the workshop progressed i experimented with different ways of manipulating the typography and am overall pretty pleased with some of the effects i managed to create. I love the style that runs through the motion graphic, and the way the lines slide in and out with music. It makes it feel very sleek and smooth. The only bit I'm not too happy with is when the french flag falls down the page, its too simplistic and i think it ruins the sleek and modern feel to the animation. Therefore if i were to develop this piece of work further i would find a more interesting style to illustrate the flag in that fits better with the style of the work, although i like how the transitions allow the animation to flow all together with the music.
