This
workshop was the first of a series of three, challenging us to gather
inspiration and use those influences to design a set of three typographical
alphabets all original and relevant to the influences. I enjoyed this first workshop
as I was able to I fully experimented with a variety of styles, medias, weights
and sizes of fonts. These were all very rough initial ideas that would give me
a kick start to develop them in future workshops.
In this first
sketch, I used the graph paper to create a proportional shape, using the smooth
curves but sharp angles I noticed on the reference to create the ‘A’. I loved
the bright contrasting colours of the reference, I used bright pro markers to
block out areas inside the shape. I liked the abstract shapes and lines inside
the letter, but If I were to develop this further I would try and recreate the
shape as I feel the ‘a’ was too top heavy I want it to have a lighter feel.
Although I think the pro marker colours worked well, I think I will bring these
sorts of bright colours into future projects as I found they contrasted well.
This next
style was inspired by the smooth curvy lines in the women’s hair of this image.
I loved the way the lines flowed and intertwined with each other. Although I
wasn’t very pleased with this outcome, I think I’d need to create a few more
letters in that style to get a good feel of whether the style would work and be
legible, but I don’t think I am going to carry it through to development.
This last
set of letters is my favourite out of all my sketches. I loved creating them
the fluency of the lines give the letters character, also the variation of
thickness created by the pro markers gives an interesting effect. Although I
think some of the curves and shapes of the letters need refining, I believe the
colours contrast well.
